A Grooming Timeline for the Groom (and Groomsmen)
When to get your haircut, beard trim, and shave before a wedding, prom, or photo shoot.

Wedding photos last for decades. Getting a haircut the morning of can leave you with a red neck and hard lines, or with a new style you don’t know how to handle. Use this timeline instead. It also works for prom, headshots, and other events.
4 to 6 weeks out: try the style
Book a trial cut. If you want a new fade, a longer beard, or a different part, test it now so you can adjust. Think about your suit or tux and what your partner likes. If you want a fuller beard, start growing it and have your barber shape it along the way.
2 weeks out: look after your skin
- Use beard oil and conditioner daily.
- Wear a hat in the sun so you don’t burn your forehead or neck.
- If you want a facial ($40) or black mask ($15), get it now so any redness settles before the day.
2 to 3 days out: get the haircut
A fresh fade looks very sharp, but 2 to 3 days of growth softens it for photos. Any redness at the neckline also settles by then, and you have time to wash and style your hair at home. This is the time for the haircut and a beard trim. You can also book the eyebrow cleanup and ear and nose waxing.
The day before or the morning of: shave or touch-up
- Clean-shaven: get a shave. It starts with a hot towel on the face and is good for a close, smooth finish. Tell your barber if your skin is sensitive.
- Bearded: a quick razor touch-up on the neck and cheek lines keeps the lines sharp without changing the length.
