Haircuts for Thinning Hair and a Receding Hairline
Cuts that make thinning hair look fuller, what to avoid, and products that add volume.

Most men deal with a receding hairline or thinning crown at some point. Many try to grow their hair longer to cover it, but long strands separate and show more scalp. A shorter, well-shaped cut usually looks better.
Cuts that help
Textured crop with a high skin fade
This is one of the best cuts for a receding hairline. The fringe is cut forward with texture, which softens the front. The skin fade on the sides makes the hair on top look thicker by contrast.
Short crew cut with a low or mid taper
Hair on top is about one to one-and-a-half inches, styled slightly up and forward. Being short and even, it keeps attention on your face and not your hairline.
Textured quiff with short sides
Good if the thinning is at the crown. Brushing the front up adds height. Keep the crown a bit shorter than the front so it lies flat.
Buzz cut with a skin fade
If the thinning is advanced, a buzz cut with a #2 or #3 on top, a skin fade, and a sharp edge-up is clean and low-maintenance. A well-trimmed beard balances it.
What to avoid
- Comb-overs. They’re obvious, and the wind blows them apart.
- Shiny, heavy products. Gel, wax, and high-shine pomade clump the hair and show the scalp.
- Puffy sides. When the sides are wide, the top looks thinner. Keep them tight.
Products and tricks
- Texture powder adds grip and lift at the roots with no shine.
- Matte clay absorbs light, so the hair looks denser.
- Blow-dry from underneath. Point warm air up from the roots to build volume.
You don’t need to feel self-conscious about this in the chair. Our barbers work with every hair type and density, and we can suggest a cut for your hairline.
