Hair and Scalp Care in the Arizona Heat

Phoenix is hard on hair and scalps: very dry air, strong sun, mineral-heavy tap water, and a lot of pool time. Here is what helps.

Dry scalp or dandruff?

They look alike, but they need different treatment.

• Dandruff is oily. The flakes are larger and yellowish, and the scalp may be red.
• Dry scalp has small, dry, white flakes and feels tight and itchy.

Anti-dandruff shampoo can make dry scalp worse. If your flakes are small and dry, use a moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo 2 to 3 times a week and condition afterward.

Sun on the scalp

If you wear a skin fade, buzz cut, or have thinning hair, your scalp gets the same sun as your face and can burn.

• Use a scalp sunscreen or a mineral spray, SPF 30 or higher.
• Wear a ventilated cap or hat for golf, hiking, or yard work.

Hard water

Phoenix water is high in calcium and magnesium. The minerals build up on hair and leave it dull and stiff.

• Use a clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks.
• A shower filter can help.
• Finish with a cool rinse.

Chlorine

Pool water strips the oil from your hair. Rinse your hair with fresh water before you swim, so it absorbs less chlorinated water, and rinse again right after.
