What to Expect From a Hot Towel Shave

How a barbershop hot towel shave works, step by step, and why it's easier on your skin than a cartridge razor.

A shave at the barbershop takes longer than one at home, and the difference shows in your skin. Here is what happens in the chair.

The steps

  1. Hot towel. A hot towel goes over your face to soften the whiskers and skin.
  2. Oil and lather. Pre-shave oil protects the skin, then warm lather is brushed on, which also lifts the hairs.
  3. Straight razor. The barber shaves with the grain first and, if you want it closer, across the grain.
  4. Cool down. A cool towel and an alcohol-free aftershave balm finish it.

Why it’s easier on skin

  • Less irritation. Multi-blade cartridges pull the hair and cut it below the skin line, which is a common cause of razor bumps. A single blade cuts it at the surface.
  • Light exfoliation. The razor also takes off some dead skin, so your face feels smoother afterward.
  • It’s relaxing. The warm towel and the unhurried pace are a good reason to book one before a busy week.

A shave isn’t a guarantee against razor burn, especially if you have curly or coarse hair. Tell your barber if your skin is sensitive and they’ll adjust.

You can add a shave to a haircut. Walk in any day of the week.
